Minami Tamaki is investigating reports that Blue Shield of California (“Blue Shield”) allowed unauthorized access to the healthcare information of millions of California residents.
In April 2025, Blue Shield disclosed that it had used Google Analytics in a manner that allowed member data to be shared with Google's advertising product, Google Ads. This data likely included protected health information, such as insurance plan details, patient account numbers, medical provider information, medical claim service dates, and “Find a Doctor” search activity. Blue Shield stated that the data was shared between April 2021 and January 2024, and that approximately 4.7 million individuals may have been affected.
Blue Shield posted a notice publicly and said it has since disabled the data-sharing tools and begun notifying affected individuals.
Companies that handle private health information have a duty to safeguard it. If you received a notice that your information was compromised or believe your personal information may have been shared, you may contact the Minami Tamaki Consumer and Employee Rights Group at (415) 788-9000 or through our online form at https://www.minamitamaki.com/contact.
