Minami Tamaki LLP is investigating reports of a data breach tied to PowerSchool Group LLC ("PowerSchool"), a Folsom, California-based provider of software used by many school districts around the country.
Earlier this month, PowerSchool revealed that hackers had compromised the personal data of students and teachers in school districts across the United States. The stolen data may include Social Security numbers, medical information, and other personally identifiable information. The extent of the breach varies by customer, and the affected parties were notified through a letter from the company.
PowerSchool states publicly that it supports over 60 million students across North America, so this breach carries with it potentially wide-ranging impact. While PowerSchool has stated that it worked with a cyber-extortion specialist to negotiate with the hackers regarding the stolen data, questions remain about the long-term security of this information. Despite the company's claim that the data has been deleted, affected users may face risks of identity theft or fraud for years to come.
Companies that handle sensitive data have a duty to protect it from unauthorized access, and when they fail, they can be held accountable. If you have received a notice or other memorandum that your family was impacted and wish to discuss this matter, you may contact the Minami Tamaki Consumer and Employee Rights Group at (415) 788-9000 or through our online form. We look forward to the opportunity to speak with you.
